Whether you’re looking to rent or own, the UK property market is notoriously challenging.
In their droves, young people are being locked out of ever owning their own homes, with the average cost of a flat in London coming in at £419,800, according to figures from Zoopla.
But there’s good news on the horizon: despite the horrendous state of the housing market, there are plenty of locations where you can buy for £100,000 and less.
Though it’s been dubbed a ‘ghost town’ by one savage Reddit review, the top of the list is Middlesbrough in North Yorkshire. Here, the average house price is £70,560, according to Land Registry data analysis by Manchester Evening News.
Found near the mouth of the River Tees and just north of the North York Moors National Park, Middlesbrough is home to just shy of 150,000 people — and you could be the next inhabitant.
It’s supposedly a fantastic place to raise a family too, voted the third best in the UK in 2022, which assessed schools, safety, air quality, affordable childcare and crucially, affordable homes.
Middlesbrough (or Boro, as some people call it), is popular amongst locals, too, who have applauded the area for its proximity to natural beauty.
‘Middlesbrough is 10 minutes by car from fantastic beaches and roughly the same from some of the best countryside England has to offer,’ one Reddit user with the name thereidenator wrote.
However, some have drawn attention to the fact that the town centre now appears to be a little ‘run-down.’
‘Unfortunately the town has turned into a total eyesore of a cesspit, personally we avoid going there unless we really, really have to,’ ATOJAR added.
‘I think almost every time we have been there over the past couple of years there has been some kind of a commotion going on,’ they continued, whilst dgreen1415 added that there is ‘almost no reason to go to the town centre’ these days.
Want to try somewhere else? Elsewhere in Yorkshire, Bradford offers average house prices of £74,686, whilst the figure for Grimsby stands at £75,147.
There’s strong reputation from County Durham too, with the typical property costing £88,197 in Shildon, £100,598 in Easington, £104,900 in Hartlepool, £107,041 in Ferryhill and £110,140 in Trimdon.
See you up there, pet!
