U.S. House of Representatives: House Session | December 1, 2023

The House voted to expel Representative George Santos (R-NY). He became the sixth House member and first Republican to be expelled in the history of the chamber, and the first House member ever to be expelled without a criminal conviction or for fighting for the Confederacy. In the 311-114 vote, 105 Republicans and 206 Democrats voted “yes,” and two members voted “present.” All Republican leaders voted against expulsion. Members also approved a Senate-passed joint resolution to block a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) lending rule that requires financial institutions to collect and report to the CFPB demographic data on certain business loan applicants, including whether they are women-owned, minority-owned, or a small business. President Biden was expected to veto the measure. Members observed a moment of silence for former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who died that morning. She was the first woman to serve on the Court, appointed by President Reagan in 1981. close
