US tariffs will not affect investments in Bangladesh: BIDA Chairman

The recently enacted decisions by the US government regarding tariffs will not affect the upcoming Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025, according to Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Ashik Chowdhury.

While talking to journalists at a press briefing on April 6 at Foreign Service Academy, BIDA Chairman said, “Investment decisions are a long-term decision. A small change will not change investment decisions overnight.”

Ashik said, “We have had preparedness regarding this decision earlier as we were talking with the US government since February about how we can rebalance the ongoing trade balance. At that time, when our high representative visited, the US officials remarked that we were the first country during the Trump administration that wanted to rebalance the trade balance.”

“So, we already have an entry point with them, so within our deadline, we will go into action accordingly,” added Ashik.

During the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025, the Chief Advisor will hand over five awards in different categories: local investor, foreign investor, sustainability investment, innovation investment, and foreign investor.

The foreign investor who will be honoured at the ceremony will receive honorary citizenship of Bangladesh, as per BIDA Chairman. The Government of Bangladesh also plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with various organisations, including NASA for non-military space exploration and the International Labour Organization (ILO) for labour law.

BIDA Chairman Ashik assured that Starlink will provide internet at the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025 for organisations and individuals. The commercial launch of Starlink only awaits the company getting a Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) licence to operate in Bangladesh, as per BIDA Chairman.

Regarding the deficit in energy supply, the BIDA Chairman mentioned that the government is already planning a special gas supply for industries. “Industrial supply of energy should be prioritised,” the BIDA Chairman added.
