British couple die in house fire in Spain | World News

An elderly couple from the UK have died in a house fire in Spain.

It is believed the fire which happened in Denia, near Benidorm, at around 11am this morning was started from a cigarette butt.

A neighbour close to the property noticed no flames but told emergency services there were blacked out windows.

The man, 78, and woman, 84, were found inside the property and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters found the inside of the home already gutted, suggesting the fire could have happened a few days ago.

It is not clear whether the couple lived at the home permanently or used it as a holiday home.

Spain’s National Police are now leading the investigation into the fire and it is believed they both died from smoke inhalation.

Autopsies will be carried out to establish their official cause of death.
