Six Flags, the largest regional amusement park operator, is closing two parks after its 2025 season.
The North Carolina-based company announced the closures in coordination with a shift in its long-term growth plans. Here’s what we know about the parks that will soon shutter.
2 Six Flags parks won’t reopen in 2026, and another won’t return in 2028
Six Flags will soon close two locations in Bowie, Maryland: Six Flags America and its accompanying waterpark, Hurricane Harbor. Both are located on an approximate 500-acre property, which the company plans to market and sell “for redevelopment as part of Six Flags’ ongoing portfolio optimization programs.”
“As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” said Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman. “After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment. We anticipate strong interest in the property and will continue to strategically pursue portfolio optimization opportunities as we work to unlock the full value of our portfolio.”
Zimmerman added that it was “a difficult decision” due to the park not being a “strategic fit” with the company’s long-range goals. He expressed gratitude to the “park associates who work hard to create lifelong memories for our guests.”
The Maryland location will begin wind-down in August but will remain open through Fright Fest. Its last day will be Nov. 2, 2025.
Six Flags has also indicated California’s Great America park in Santa Clara will shutter after the 2027 season.
Is Six Flags Over Texas closing?
The company has given no indication of plans to close any of Six Flags Over Texas locations, which include the following:
- Six Flags Over Texas and Hurricane Harbor in Arlington
- Six Flags Fiesta and Hurricane Harbor in San Antonio
- Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Splashtown in Spring
- Schlitterbahn Resort in New Braunfels
- Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Galveston
