UK households told ‘do not’ fix squeaky gates and doors for key reason

It might seem odd, but it could help to protect your property

UK households are being urged not to fix squeaky gates and doors for one key reason. Security experts are advising homeowners to protect their properties now, as burglars could see darker evenings as a new opportunity.

As we enter the colder season, thieves may see the longer nights as a better chance to rob homes. But there are low-cost and even free ways households can fend them off – one such way is choosing not to fix their annoying squeaky gate.

A security expert has now shared the best ways you can deter burglars from your property this autumn:

“While homeowners are vigilant of the risk of burglaries when they head off on extended holidays, now is also an important time to make sure your property is protected,” says Shahzad Ali.

“With this in mind, we’ve provided some tips to consider this autumn. Whether you simply want to consider subtle deterrents or implement more permanent home security systems, these will all go a long way to improving home safety and peace of mind.”

Here are the expert’s top tips for securing your home this autumn:

Subtle deterrents

Burglary can be prevented by making minor changes to your home. Windows and doors, if not properly secured, can act as beacons for burglars, while subtle signs like a “Beware of the dog” sign can deter them.

Even seemingly minor details, such as maintaining well-lit exteriors, installing motion-activated lights, and even having a slightly squeaky back door and gate can dissuade burglars from targeting homes.

Make it appear that someone’s home

Creating the illusion of an occupied home is another effective strategy. Utilising timers for lights, TVs, or radios can simulate activity.

Keep in touch with your neighbours for support

Developing good relationships with your neighbours can be a great help when it comes to home security, as they can help keep an eye on your property and report any suspicious activities in your absence.

They can also maintain your house surroundings during your absence, and this enhances the perception of someone being home.

Find a way for your packages to be delivered securely

Package deliveries can be hard to keep track of, especially when there is no one in the house and they can’t be posted through the door.

You may want to consider having some packages delivered to a secure location, such as a local depot or shop for you to pick up yourself, instead of a delivery driver looking around the property boundaries for a safe space.

Install security cameras and alarm systems

Depending on your budget, one of the of the best ways to deter burglars is with security cameras and home alarm systems, with the prospect of an alarm sounding prompting them to swiftly abandon the property.

These were described as “psychological barriers”, as they cause the criminal to have to put in extra effort, or suggest a chance they could get caught.
