Nepal’s central bank on Thursday (27 November) released new Rs 100 currency notes carrying a revised national map that includes Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura, territories India asserts fall within its borders, the Indian Express reported.
The Nepal Rastra Bank’s (NRB) new note bears the signature of former governor Maha Prasad Adhikari and is dated 2081 Bikram Samvat, representing the previous year, 2024.
The move follows the Nepal government’s earlier decision to update official documents with the political map unveiled in May 2020 by the then K P Sharma Oli-led administration.
That map, depicting the three territories as part of Nepal, was later endorsed by Parliament.
India had strongly objected to the 2020 political map, calling it a “unilateral act” and warning Kathmandu that such “artificial enlargement” of claims would not be accepted.
An NRB spokesperson noted that the map had been present on the earlier Rs 100 note and said it has now been updated in line with the government’s directive.
He clarified that among the country’s various currency denominations — including Rs 10, Rs 50, Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 — only the Rs 100 note carries the map.
The newly issued note showcases Mt Everest on the left and a watermark of Nepal’s national flower, the rhododendron, on the right.
At the centre, a faint green outline of the country appears in the background, accompanied by the Ashoka Pillar and the text “Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.”
The reverse side features a horned rhino, along with security elements such as a thread and an embossed black dot to assist the visually impaired.
Nepal shares over 1,850 km of border with five Indian states: Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
