An investment group that includes NBA superstar Kevin Durant purchased the site of Six Flags America, a theme park in Prince George’s County, Maryland, that closed in 2025.
Six Flags America had been in operation for five decades, but it officially closed in November because it was deemed to be “not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan.”
The 500-acre property had been available for purchase since the park closed.
Here’s what we know about the sale of the theme park, located about 20 miles east of Washington DC.
How much did the Six Flags America property sell for?
According to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Six Flags America was sold April 8 “to a joint venture between 35V, the investment firm co-founded by NBA champion Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman, and Atlanta-based TPA Group.”
Durant, an NBA MVP and four-time Olympic gold medalist, grew up in Prince George’s County.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
What will happen to the Six Flags America property?
Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy envisions the property being used as a mixed-use entertainment site, but it’s unclear what the investment group is planning.
“It’s going to be a different site, it’s going to be different activities there, but those memories we want to continue to have at that site, and I’m really excited,” she said Wednesday.
She hopes for the new site to be used annually, as opposed to Six Flags America, which WJLA said brought in $3 million annually in its seasonal schedule.
Braveboy called the sale “an exciting new chapter for redevelopment in the county.
“This is a major step forward for Prince George’s County and a meaningful opportunity to elevate this property into a destination development that reflects the expectations of our residents and strengthens economic development in our County.”
She encouraged the community to get involved and say how they want the property to be used. Braveboy, along with the new ownership team, will host events to give area residents an opportunity to be a part of the conversation.
What is Six Flags America?
Six Flags America — in Woodmore, Maryland — opened in 1974, first as a drive-thru wildlife center.
It was later called “Wild World” and “Adventure World” before rebranding as a Six Flags theme park in 1999.
It was known for having several signature roller coasters, including Superman: Ride of Steel, Joker’s Jinx and Batwing. Other popular rides included Wonder Woman Lasso of Truth and Firebird.
The park also included the Hurricane Harbor waterpark, which was included in the Six Flags admission.
“After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment,” Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said in an announcement last year when the park announced its closure.
