Gold ETF Gains 11.7% YTD, Beating Major Stock Indices in 2026 – News and Statistics

Major U.S. stock market indices were recently trading lower for the year as capital moved toward low-risk assets during geopolitical conflict in the Middle East. According to a report from Yahoo Finance, a shift in tensions has since contributed to a market recovery.

As of the close on Tuesday, April 14, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had gained 0.3% for the year. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 indexes had year-to-date returns of 1.6% and 2.5%, respectively.

Gold ETF Outperforms Stock Market

In contrast, the SPDR Gold Trust has achieved a year-to-date return of 11.7%. This exchange-traded fund, which tracks the price of gold, has outperformed the stock market for a second consecutive year following a significant return in 2025.

Elevated economic and political uncertainty is seen as creating conditions that could support further gains for the metal.

Factors Supporting Gold’s Value

Gold is historically recognized as a store of value and remains legal tender in many U.S. states, though its scarcity limits practical use. The total volume of gold extracted throughout human history is limited compared to other precious metals like silver.

While it generates no revenue, gold is considered a reliable safe-haven asset during periods of uncertainty. It also serves as a hedge against inflation, a role linked to its historical function under the gold standard. The United States ended its link to the gold standard in 1971.

A long-term relationship exists between the expansion of the U.S. money supply, a decline in the dollar’s purchasing power, and an increase in the price of gold. Some investors hold gold based on expectations of continued growth in the money supply. Concerns have been expressed by notable hedge fund managers regarding high government spending and a national debt that recently reached a record level.
