Indian national held in Jashore with Tk 1.93cr gold, foreign currencies

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained an Indian national along with 900 grams of gold in the paste form and various foreign currencies during a drive in Jashore early Wednesday.

The detainee was identified as Ali Amin Ahmed, said Lt Col Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan, commanding officer of Jashore-49 BGB Battalion.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of BGB-49 intercepted Amin in the early hours in a bus on the Jashore-Narail highway in the Taraganj area of Sadar upazila and recovered the gold paste from his possession.

During the search, foreign currencies of different countries, including the UAE dirhams and Indian rupees, were also recovered.

Later, testing by the Bangladesh Jeweller’s Association (BAJUS) confirmed the gold paste as pure gold.

According to the BGB, the total value of the seized gold paste and foreign currencies is estimated at Tk 1,93,42,011.

The force said passport records show the detainee had travelled multiple times between India, the Middle East, Egypt and Bangladesh since 2024.

During preliminary interrogation, he reportedly stated that he travelled from Mumbai to Dubai on April 20 and later entered Bangladesh via Dhaka, intending to reach India through the Benapole land port via Satkhira.

The seized gold paste and foreign currencies were deposited with the Jashore treasury, while the detainee was handed over to Jashore Kotwali Police Station after a case was filed against him.

Lt Col Saiful Alam Khan said BGB maintains a zero-tolerance policy on smuggling gold, drugs and other contraband items along the border, and the operation was part of that ongoing effort.
