Billions of dollars in unclaimed property have been paid back to Texans, and billions more are still waiting to be claimed.
Texas has returned more than $5 billion in unclaimed property to its rightful owners, according to the Texas Comptroller. Unclaimed property can be any financial asset that has been abandoned for periods ranging from one to 15 years, including from mortgage and title companies, utility providers, insurance companies, oil and gas companies and more.
Unclaimed property is not real estate and usually not physical property, clarifies the Texas Comptroller website.

Unclaimed property search
You can search for unclaimed property using the Texas Comptroller’s claim search page. All you have to do is enter your name, but you can narrow your search by adding a location or property ID.
How to initiate a claim
Once you search and find your property, you may file a claim using a form provided by the Texas Comptroller.
You will receive a confirmation email or letter requiring additional documentation to file your claim. Once those documents are submitted, you can track your claim’s status.
What do you need to file a claim?
The state requires, at a minimum, the signed claim form and photo identification. A follow-up email from the Texas Comptroller will advise you of any additional documentation, such as a Social Security card or other documents.
