CLARKSBURG, W.Va (WDTV) – The City of Clarksburg posted on Facebook, warning residents that the area has recently seen an increase in scams involving digital currency and Bitcoin.
Officials say scammers are contacting victims claiming to be connected with law enforcement, to issue arrest warrants, to threaten past-due bills, or claiming someone missed court dates or had unpaid tolls.
The scammers then pressure victims to send money via Bitcoin, Cash App, or gift cards.
Officials remind residents that legitimate agencies will never require payment through these means.
If you receive a request like this, officials say, “do not send them money and contact local law enforcement.”
Authorities have also received reports of potential victims being directed to the Bitcoin ATM at the Mountaineer Mart on Buckhannon Ave. If anyone requests a deposit to this location, consider it a major red flag, said officials.
If you think you have been a victim of a scam scenario, call (304) 626-4900.
