Man arrested following seven-hour incident on Chorley roof


Police were called to Bolton Road shortly after 9am on Sunday (May 24) due to reports of a man climbing onto the roof of a property and refusing to come down.

The man, 42, then began “throwing objects from the roof and setting small fires” and causing “substantial damage” to houses and cars before he sustained an injury due to falling debris.

Some properties were evacuated before the man, from Adlington, was arrested nearly seven hours after the incident began.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault, assault on an emergency worker, arson with intent to endanger life and criminal damage and remains in custody.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “At 9.16am today (May 24) we were called to Bolton Road in Chorley following reports a man had climbed onto the roof of a property and was refusing to come down.

“Officers have attended the scene and the man has begun throwing objects from the roof and setting small fires.

“Emergency services, including our colleagues from the fire service and the North West Ambulance Service, attended the scene.

“As a result of the incident a man suffered an arm injury as a result of falling debris. Substantial damage has been caused to several houses and parked vehicles.

“A small number of surrounding properties were evacuated due to safety concerns.

“At 4pm, a 42-year-old man from Adlington was arrested on suspicion of assault, assault on an emergency worker, arson with intent to endanger life and criminal damage. He remains in custody at this time.”
