Amazon Delivering the Future Event: New Robots, Investments, and Jobs in Europe – News and Statistics

Amazon held its Delivering the Future event on Thursday in the United Kingdom, where it announced a series of major initiatives for Europe, including billions in new investment, thousands of jobs, and a new generation of robots. The event, as reported by Euronews Next, took place at LCY3, described as Amazon’s busiest warehouse in Europe, located in Dartford.

The LCY3 facility spans more than 216,000 square metres and delivers 4 million units per week, according to the company. The site features 32 kilometres of conveyor belts and already uses robotics and AI software that Amazon says has helped employees work faster and safer. On the second floor, 1,660 mobile robots known as Hercules Drives move around 21,700 tall, yellow storage towers called pods, which human workers have stocked following directions from AI software.

Amazon’s blue robots, which resemble oversized robot vacuum cleaners, can lift up to 567 kg and use sensors, 3D cameras, and navigation software to move around the warehouse floor. Martin Newton, Amazon Tours leader, explained that the robots use an AI system called Deep Fleet to navigate the building, coordinating movement much like managing thousands of cars on a road without traffic lights. The robots can also self-report issues for engineers to inspect.

Once an order is packed by a human, the package passes through a SICK scanner that measures 3D dimensions, reads shipping labels, and sends parcels into the correct lane for a specific delivery station. Amazon stated that this process occurs in milliseconds, with the package never stopping, handling thousands of parcels per hour with near-perfect accuracy. From there, packages move through a shipping sorter that travels 180 km a day inside the facility.

Thousands of employees and associates work at the Dartford site each day, performing quality control, picking orders from inventory towers, and packing them at more than 200 stations across each floor. With the new investments, Amazon said the next generation of its Proteus autonomous robot will be able to handle heavy lifting up to 400 kg, reduce physical strain on workers, and support site safety. Scott Dresser, vice president of Amazon Robotics, commented that the robot figures out the priority, route, and timing, acting as an assistant for material movement.

Euronews saw the previous generation of Proteus currently used in the United States, but the newer version, which Amazon said would understand conversational prompts from employees, was not presented during the demo. Amazon indicated the robot is being piloted in its labs, with deployment in Europe planned for the first half of 2027.

Labour organisations and experts have previously warned that warehouse automation can increase pressure on human workers to keep up with machine-driven pace. Tye Brady, chief technologist at Amazon Robotics, stated that the company builds machines in service of people, matching the rates of people in their natural movements, and creating a system of people and machines working together. Brady added that more robotics would allow employees to focus on critical thinking, such as spotting a leaking pallet before a robot moves it through the sortation area.
