Lagarde Urges G7 to Address Chinese Currency Undervaluation Amid Trade Imbalances – News and Statistics

China has denied that it manipulates its currency for trade advantage, but its growing trade surpluses are among the macroeconomic imbalances that concern leaders of the Group of Seven nations. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde on Monday called for global discussions on the undervaluation of the Chinese currency as part of these imbalances that threaten the world economy.

Speaking at an event in Brussels, Lagarde cited research from the International Monetary Fund indicating that the Chinese currency, also known as the renminbi, was undervalued by 15 to 16 percent when its nominal exchange rate is adjusted for international differences in inflation. She said this situation fully justifies further talks among G7 leaders and beyond about excessive imbalances, including a currency component.

Europe has struggled to compete with China in sectors it once dominated, such as high-end automobiles, partly because Chinese goods are cheaper. Lagarde dismissed the idea of a new Plaza Accord to strengthen the yuan, noting that the 1985 international agreement to weaken the dollar was made when circumstances were different.

The G7 leaders met last week in France, where chronic U.S. deficits and Europe’s underinvestment were also discussed as major macroeconomic mismatches.
