University of Alabama to launch 3-year investment to strengthen academic advising, student success

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – The University of Alabama is launching a new, three-year plan to help strengthen academic advising and student success.

Alabama officials said the new initiative will “transform and expand academic advising across campus, representing UA’s commitment to ensuring every students graduates with clear direction and prepared to begin their career.”

The university said the investment will focus on strengthening student advising infrastructure by directly investing directly in advisers.

“Across this campus, our advisers do extraordinary work helping students find their way, overcome challenges and reach their goals,” said Alabama provost Dr. Lesley Reid. “This initiative helps them do their best work, providing the resources, manageable caseloads and institutional support to do so.”

The university also said the initiative partners with the Office of Undergraduate Education to coordinate advising across all colleges, and that advisers will receive enhanced training, support and resources aligned with best practices and shared student success goals.

Over the next three years, Alabama said they will hire 49 new advisers across its colleges and that each college will follow a customized plan to “reach nationally recognized adviser-to-student ration benchmarks by the end of the 2028-2029 academic year.”

“The University’s commitment to expanding advising resources will create a more intentional and impactful academic experience for students,” said SGA President Samantha Simmons. “It is important that UA continues to connect students to the support and information needed to thrive in the classroom.”

Alabama said the first wave of new hires will begin this fall.
