PlayStation has announced that, beginning August 20, the Latin American PlayStation Store will no longer display prices in US Dollars and will charge in local currencies. This simplifies digital purchases while eliminating the difficulties posed by daily exchange-rate uncertainty.
For years, players in the region displayed the US dollar amount for the goods they were purchasing, meaning the displayed price was never the price they paid. There’s also a fixed rate that Tony will be using to convert existing funds in digital wallets and gift cards in the region. Sony revealed that it will use a fixed rate of 20.50 MXN per $1.00 in existing wallets. In Honduras, the conversion rate is 26.395338 HNL per dollar, and in Nicaragua, it is 36.72283 per dollar.
Sony Reveals Fixed Exchange Rates for PlayStation Store Wallets

The concern some players are having is that they are not sure if this will already factor in local taxes or if games will cost even more, and they already do. In the case of the Mexican exchange rate, the current US dollar is worth about 17.5 MXN, which means there is an inflated exchange rate, and Sony is potentially creating a financial cushion for itself that is identical to the current tax rate in Mexico. If the exchange rate includes local taxes, game prices will remain stable, but if, for whatever reason, VAT is charged separately, players are concerned that they’re being forced to pay even more than before.
At a time when many of Sony PlayStation’s choices are under a microscope following the announcement of their decision to do away with physical game discs beginning in 2028, and hundreds of movies were just removed from the libraries of those who purchase them because of a licensing agreement expiring, trust in the brand is waning for many. Prior to this announcement, Sony revealed that it is also shutting down the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 console and the PlayStation Vita handheld.
