England manager Gareth Southgate has split from his agent, Terry Byrne, after waiting to be repaid money which was used in a £25million property deal without his permission
England manager Gareth Southgate has parted company with his long-term agent, Terry Byrne.
Southgate, 53, had been represented by Byrne for around eight years, a period where he has gone from managing the England Under-21 to leading his country’s senior team.
The former Middlesbrough chief gave notice to Byrne back in January, according to a new report from The Mail which outlines the details of the split. It’s claimed that Byrne used money owed to Southgate and former Chelsea and England winger Joe Cole to purchase a £25million property in London without their permission.
Southgate had been waiting six months for Byrne to repay him prior to their parting of ways at the start of the year. It’s understood that the England chief has no immediate plans to partner with a new agent given Euro 2024 is looming large on the horizon.
Although Southgate’s contract is due to expire following the European Championships, The Football Association are hopeful that they will be able to convince him to stay in his post beyond December.
Southgate considered his future after England were knocked out of the World Cup by France in December 2022 before deciding to stay on.
And he teased that he could yet sign another contract extension earlier this week at the Nations League draw. Southgate ruled out making a decision on his long-term future before this summer’s tournament, which take places in Germany.
“You’ve got to keep winning football matches, and then make decisions so I’m completely relaxed about that,” he said after being pressed on his future plans. “All my focus is on delivering the best possible tournament this summer. My only focus is to try and win the tournament for England. I think you’ve got to see how the summer goes. It’s as simple as that.
“In my view, I know what we’re capable of achieving in the summer, I know what my own benchmark of success would be, after that I’m not really thinking about anything else at the moment.
“Without a doubt it’s exciting to take the team, it’s always been exciting to take the team, whatever the strengths of the squad. In the end, we’ve got to deliver performances, and you’ve got to make the best decisions for everybody really. I won’t be in a position to make that decision before the tournament.”
