Italy and Egypt are reinforcing their energy ties, with Eni, the Italian hydrocarbon major, serving as the central pillar. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi welcomed Eni’s chief executive, Claudio Descalzi, in El Alamein, joined by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi.

The talks centered on Eni’s capital commitments, upcoming exploration and development ventures in Egyptian territories, and advancing Egypt’s position as a Mediterranean gas hub. Eni’s cumulative investment in Egypt stands at $8.5 billion, and through its affiliate Ieoc, it generated roughly 242,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily in 2025, reflecting the company’s equity stake.

Descalzi outlined an ambitious roadmap featuring 30 exploration wells and 200 development wells. The approach aims to boost output by leveraging both fresh discoveries and current infrastructure, prioritizing rapid-implementation projects that utilize existing facilities and connections, alongside prolonging the productive lifespan of mature fields. Operations span diverse regions, including the Mediterranean, Nile Delta, Sinai, and Western Desert.

Since 2025, these efforts have driven a 50% uptick in production from Sinai’s offshore fields, with additional finds in the Nile Delta and Western Desert. A notable highlight is Denise West, uncovered in April 2026 during a drilling push that began in October 2025 within the Temsah concession. This reservoir contains approximately 56.6 billion cubic meters of gas and 130 million barrels of condensate. Its strategic value lies in swift development via existing infrastructure. Eni, alongside partners bp and Egpc, aims to finalize an investment decision shortly, targeting gas output within two years.

Zohr, the eastern Mediterranean’s largest gas field, remains a cornerstone of Eni’s Egyptian portfolio. The infrastructure surrounding Egypt’s gas production and processing capabilities underpins Cairo’s ambition to solidify its regional energy hub status. This dovetails with Italy’s broader interest in Egypt functioning as a Mediterranean energy gateway, connecting local output, regional imports, and export-processing facilities.

The dialogue also touched on Cronos, an Eni-led project off Cyprus. Having recently secured Final Investment Decision (FID), it plans to channel Cypriot gas through Egyptian infrastructure for market delivery. This arrangement links Cyprus, Egypt, Eni, and European consumers, further cementing Cairo’s hub role.

Beyond energy, the partnership encompasses social initiatives. Following a March 2026 memorandum of understanding, Eni is set to advance health-sector projects, including hospital construction and management, to bolster Egypt’s capabilities in skills development and complex infrastructure oversight.

With $8.5 billion invested, daily output near 242,000 barrels of oil equivalent, 30 exploration and 200 development wells, and flagship projects like Denise West, Zohr, and Cronos, Eni remains pivotal to Egypt’s vision of becoming a Mediterranean energy platform.
