A major housing project in Basildon has been shortlisted for a national award recognising excellence in public sector property development.
Sempra Homes and Basildon Council have been named finalists in the Project of the Year category at the Government Property Awards 2026.
The shortlist recognises the delivery of 166 homes across the Chapelgate, Broadmayne and Tyefields developments in Basildon.
Built on previously underused brownfield land, the schemes have provided a mix of affordable rent, shared ownership and private sale properties.
They have also brought wider improvements to the surrounding communities.

All affordable rent and shared ownership homes across the three developments are now occupied.
More than 60 per cent of the private sale homes have also been reserved or sold, demonstrating strong demand for the properties.

The developments were delivered through a partnership involving Sempra Homes, Basildon Council, Homes England, One Public Estate, South Essex Councils, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, The Hill Group and Site Ready Solutions.

Government funding helped unlock infrastructure requirements and supported the delivery of a range of housing options for residents.
The projects have also included wider community benefits, with new play and picnic areas, footpaths, cycle lanes and improvements to open spaces.
New trees and wildflower planting have also been introduced to boost biodiversity across the sites.
Founded in 2016 as the commercial arm of Basildon Council, Sempra Homes aims to deliver 1,700 new homes by 2030.
The Government Property Awards celebrate projects that demonstrate excellence across the public sector property industry, with winners set to be announced later this year.
