U.S. stock futures are posting slight gains early Friday as investors digest targeted geopolitical sanctions, debates over Federal Reserve independence, and the Bank of Japan’s 31-year high rate-hike decision.

The Polymarket (CRYPTO: POL) crowd is leaning bullish for the Sept. 18 trading session. The “S&P 500 (SPX) Up or Down on September 18?” contract currently reflects a 65% chance of a higher open.

Sept 18 Polymarket Odds For S&P 500 Opening:

Why That Number Matters

Traders are navigating a complex macro environment featuring crypto-targeted sanctions and central bank drama:

  • Slightly Positive Index Futures: Equity futures point to a muted but green open for major benchmarks. Dow Jones futures rose 0.11%, and S&P 500 futures advanced 0.11%. Nasdaq 100 futures ticked up 0.09%, while Russell 2000 futures dipped a marginal 0.01%.

  • Fed Independence & Yields: Following the Fed’s unanimous 25-basis-point rate hike, controversy erupted after President Donald Trump claimed he instructed Fed Chair Kevin Warsh to vote with the board. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) called Warsh a “sock puppet,” while investor Peter Schiff questioned the narrative’s validity. Economist Mohamed El-Erian defended the Fed’s credibility, noting the unanimous 12-0 vote and stabilizing bond markets. The 10-year Treasury yield cooled to 4.93% after briefly topping 5% earlier in the week.

  • Geopolitics, Crypto Sanctions & Energy: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent escalated “Operation Economic Outcast” by sanctioning BitBank, a Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) exchange linked to Iranian financier Babak Zanjani, for moving hundreds of millions to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Meanwhile, energy prices retreated from recent highs; Brent crude fell 1.27% to $103.49 a barrel, and WTI crude dropped 0.96% to $100.93.

  • Earnings & Eco Data: Friday’s earnings slate is relatively light, featuring reports from NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NASDAQ:NB), Trio-Tech International (NYSE:TRT), and Celularity Inc. (NASDAQ:CELU). Economically, August’s industrial production data will be released at 9:15 a.m. ET.

The Bull Case and Market Outlook

Jeffrey Roach, Chief Economist for LPL Financial, notes that despite the Fed’s hawkish pivot, the underlying U.S. economy keeps powering forward. Fed officials recently revised growth projections higher for 2026 and 2027, anticipating 2.4% expansion and sustained low unemployment.

Internationally, easing U.S.-China trade tensions are providing a constructive backdrop. Washington and Beijing are reportedly weighing reciprocal tariff cuts on $30 billion of trade ahead of the upcoming leaders’ summit.
