New images of the bothy on Hildasay have been featured in a property listing after the uninhabited island went on the market.

First advertised by Shetland estate agent Kelvin Anderson last month, Hildasay is now also featured on Rightmove.

And the listing features an intriguing glimpse inside the traditional stone-built bothy on the island.

Originally a croft house, the building was renovated around 1992 and the owners and visitors have used it for occasional stays.

Former paratrooper Chris Lewis stayed on the island when lockdown struck during his epic trek around the coastline of the UK.

The bothy features a living area with a stove, a raised open-plan sleeping area with a further stove, and a washroom containing a shower cubicle, wash basin and toilet.

According to the listing on Rightmove, the bothy provides a “practical base from which to explore the island, with its traditional character complementing the surrounding landscape”.

Although it is not connected to mains electricity, a small wind turbine and diesel generator have been used to provide power in the past.

Located off the west coast of Shetland’s Mainland, Hildasay extends to 267 acres, and is available for offers over £350,000.

It is described as an extraordinary opportunity to own a historic private island.

“Hildasay offers a remarkable combination of privacy, natural beauty, fascinating history and the rare opportunity to own an entire Scottish island,” the listing states.

It is advertised for buyers “seeking a private retreat, a connection with nature or simply the experience of owning one of Scotland’s remarkable islands”.

“With no neighbouring residential properties and the surrounding sea providing a natural boundary, Hildasay offers a level of privacy and seclusion that is increasingly difficult to find,” it adds.

“Hildasay is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a substantial private island in one of Scotland’s most distinctive coastal locations.

“A rare opportunity to own your own piece of Shetland.”
