Chipotle Slides 3% as Starbucks Rules Out Acquisition; Starbucks Stock Rises While McDonald’s Stock Slips

Quick Read

  • Starbucks denied acquiring Chipotle, sending CMG shares down 5% and stripping out the deal premium built over several days of takeover speculation.

  • McDonald’s slipped just 0.8% and Yum! Brands gained 0.2%, confirming the selloff is Chipotle-specific rather than a broad restaurant sector move.

  • Without a buyer, Chipotle’s October 28 Q3 report becomes the key test, with traffic recovery the metric the takeover story had been masking.

Takeover hopes that had been lifting Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE:CMG) shares are fading after the most logical buyer stepped aside. Chipotle stock is at $30.55, down 3% in morning trading, as Chipotle shares give back the deal premium that takeover chatter had built in. Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) is the company that ended the speculation, stating that it isn’t pursuing an acquisition of the burrito chain.

Notably, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is at $778.69, essentially flat, so the broader market offers no explanation for the drop. Thus, the selling is concentrated in Chipotle stock.

Meanwhile, McDonald’s (NYSE:MCD) stock trades at $233.32, down 0.8%, representing a much smaller move than the one in Chipotle stock. At the same time, Yum! Brands (NYSE:YUM) stock is at $145.03, up 0.2%, holding its ground as McDonald’s stock edges lower. As for Starbucks stock, it’s up 1% to $92.04.

Starbucks Denial Strips Out the Deal Premium

A Starbucks representative said on October 12 that the coffee chain isn’t buying Chipotle, ending several days of takeover speculation. Last Thursday, a published report said Starbucks had spent recent months working with advisors on a proposal to acquire the burrito chain, and that account carried Chipotle shares higher. Such a combination would have been the largest restaurant takeover on record, and that is why the denial is landing so hard on Chipotle stock.
