President William Ruto has announced an additional Sh300 million to build a second market in Kapenguria, West Pokot County, citing the growing number of traders in the area.
The President said the new market would be built in January 2027 after an assessment established that the ongoing Sh147 million Makutano Modern Market would not accommodate all traders.
The announcement came as Ruto continued his 10-day tour of the North Rift Valley on October 16, inspecting development projects and launching new initiatives in the county.
The Makutano Modern Market is 69 per cent complete and is scheduled for completion in December 2026.
Ruto also announced that the National Government would take over the construction of the 10,000-seater Makutano Stadium from the county government and inject Sh800 million to complete it.
The stadium is expected to provide modern sporting facilities to nurture local talent and promote sports development.
At the Kapenguria Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), the President laid the foundation stone for a 580-bed student hostel valued at Sh221 million under the Affordable Housing Programme.
He said the government would also build 20 classrooms to expand the institution’s capacity to train more healthcare professionals to support the delivery of Universal Health Coverage.
Ruto noted that 270,000 West Pokot residents had registered with the Social Health Authority, expanding access to affordable healthcare.
In Makutano, Kapenguria Constituency, the President flagged off the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project, under which the government is spending Sh335 million to connect 1,719 homes to electricity.
The project is expected to expand access to power among households in the area.
The President’s engagements in West Pokot focused on infrastructure, healthcare training, electricity connectivity, markets and sports facilities, with several projects receiving additional government funding to support their completion or expansion.
