Charleston hotel investment firm TMGOC Ventures rebrands

A hospitality investment firm with roots in Charleston and a portfolio stretching across the Southeast has a new name as it enters its next phase of growth.

TMGOC Ventures has rebranded as Montford Group, a name that co-founder and managing partner Sunju Patel said reflects the evolution of a real estate platform he began building in the Holy City.

The company reports that it now represents about $1.5 billion in existing investments and its development pipeline, encompassing more than 4,233 hotel rooms across the U.S.

Despite the new name, the company said its ownership, leadership, investment strategy and portfolio remain unchanged.

“Montford Group represents the evolution of our firm, not a change in its foundation,” Patel said. “We have built this platform by combining an entrepreneurial approach to identifying opportunities with institutional discipline in how we invest, capitalize and execute.”

The Montford name has personal significance for Patel, he shared in a press release. It is a nod to the firm’s Charleston roots — it was the name of his firm before TMGOC Ventures — where he began building his real estate business.

Patel and Glenn Alba of Florida-based Opterra Capital first teamed up to develop Moxy Charleston Downtown, the 131-room Marriott-branded hotel at 547 Meeting St. The pair later combined their platforms in 2022 to create TMGOC Ventures.

The firm has since expanded its investments well beyond Charleston.

Recent projects include a Fairmont and Element by Westin conversion in downtown New Orleans, The Ritz-Carlton hotel and residences in Savannah and the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel in Maryland.

Montford Group invests in select-service, lifestyle and luxury hotels, with work spanning acquisitions, development, asset management and structured investments. Its portfolio includes brands like Marriott International, Hilton, Hyatt, Accor’s Fairmont, The Ritz-Carlton and Moxy by Marriott.
