The fastest-growing name in used-car retail has turned into one of the group’s weakest performers. Carvana (NYSE:CVNA) stock is down 31% year to date (YTD) to $58.11 in afternoon trading, leaving it well behind its closest rivals. Selling used cars online and financing many of those purchases, Carvana depends on both vehicle margins and loan economics.
Meanwhile, CarMax (NYSE:KMX) stock is up 34% YTD to $51.70, a gain that runs opposite to the slide in Carvana stock. AutoNation (NYSE:AN) stock is down 23% YTD to $159.55, a smaller drop than Carvana stock has suffered. CarMax runs a store-based used-car business and AutoNation runs franchised new-car dealerships, which sets Carvana’s finance-heavy online model apart from both.
Carvana Lags Both Benchmark Funds
Two benchmark funds have held up far better than Carvana stock. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSEARCA:XRT) is up 3% YTD. This indicates that the softness of Carvana stock isn’t just a retail-specific problem. For a broader sector gauge, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is up 13% YTD.
The XRT retail fund counts AutoNation among its top holdings and still rose on the year. So, traders might wonder whether Carvana stock is due for a turnaround.

Profit Per Vehicle Drives the Bear Case
Carvana’s sales engine is still running hot. In Q2 2026, the company sold a record 197,325 retail units, up 38% year over year, while revenue reached $7.38 billion. Chief executive Ernie Garcia stated in the Q2 release that Carvana is “still just 1.5% of the U.S. automotive market.”
