Western Digital (WDC) Stock Price Drops As Q1 Results Spur Profit Quality Concerns

Western Digital walked into its Q1 FY2027 report wearing a value label, with a P/E near 13x and a stock that had fallen about 27% over the past month. The quarter then landed with a thud in the market, the share price slipping almost 3% to about $344 in the first full session after the release, even as the headline print showed US$4.4b in revenue and US$4.86 in basic EPS.

The real story is profit quality. Trailing net income sits near US$9.9b, but a high share of non cash earnings now hangs over the Western Digital equity case.

Western Digital bull case meets early capacity milestones

Western Digital’s bullish storyline hangs on tight supply, data center skew, and disciplined capacity adds actually translating into durable economics.

“Management says its entire 2026 production is already spoken for, with firm orders from its largest customers and long-term agreements stretching into 2027 and 2028.”

The latest quarter backs that up. Cloud made 88% of revenue, exabytes shipped increased, and management now talks about visibility with top customers extending to 2030 to 2031. Guidance points to higher exabyte volumes and a bigger mix of 40TB ePMR drives, while capex is directed to areal density and automation rather than new unit capacity.

Bear case on margins and China not dismissed yet

The bear angle is that elevated profitability attracts new capacity and that flash in China erodes HDD economics over time.

“Chinese memory makers such as YMTC are expanding NAND capacity, and while that is flash rather than hard drives, it pressures the entire storage complex and sharpens the eternal question of when solid state becomes cheap enough to eat into the capacity tier.”

Current results still show pricing power, with gross margin at 58.1% and incremental margins very high. Management acknowledged input cost pressure from DRAM and NAND and rising capex as peers, including Toshiba, invest. The stock’s near 3% drop after earnings and sector derating suggest investors are already bracing for future margin compression even as this print stayed strong.

Hunt For Mispriced Earnings Power

Western Digital shows that strong reported results can align with a muted share response. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market evaluates their earnings power more fully.

  • Company 1 – 36% below our estimate – builds an advisory franchise with deeper capabilities to win larger capital markets and private capital mandates.

  • Company 2 – 25% below our estimate – turns fresh manufacturing capacity into higher value optical programs tied to AI focused data center buildouts.

  • Company 3 – 40% below our estimate – scales a device recommerce platform as trade in subsidies push more consumers into structured refurbishment channels.

That is three of the list. See all 27 potentially undervalued companies →
