American households directly held $52.12 trillion of U.S. corporate stock on June 30, 2026. The whole market was valued at $123.69 trillion. The latest Federal Reserve data show that households owned a 42.1% direct share, the highest since Q4 1998.
The Fed released those figures on September 11, 2026. They got renewed attention in an October 23 report from Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) strategist Ben Snider, who put the household stake at about 42%.
Index funds barely responded to the renewed attention. On October 27, 2026, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) closed at $769.66, up 0.57%. The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (NYSEARCA:VTI) closed at $377.92, up 0.61%.
Households now own more of the market but trade it less. That matters if you hold a total-market fund and are close to retirement.
What the Federal Reserve Data Actually Show
The 42.1% reading is higher than every quarter of 1999, when the share ran from 41.7% to 41.9%. The reading exceeds every quarter of 2000 as well, when the share ran from 40.3% to 41.4%. Only Q4 1998 was higher, at 43.0%.
The share rose from 35.7% in Q1 2020 to 40.8% at the end of 2025 and 41.5% in Q1 2026. Direct holdings grew from $44.01 trillion in Q1 2026 to $52.12 trillion in Q2.
