On Thursday, the blue-chip stocks bolstered the SMI. Shares of pharmaceutical giant Novartis rose 2.0 percent around 9:50 a.m., those of food giant Nestlé gained 1.0 percent, and those of pharmaceutical company Roche rose 0.5 percent. In contrast, shares of the building materials company Amrize plummeted by a good 5 percent following disappointing quarterly results and a lowered full-year forecast.

According to traders, the stock market rally of the past few weeks is primarily due to a shift in investor behavior. Investors are increasingly pulling money out of technology stocks and investing instead in companies that are relatively resilient to economic crises. The Swiss stock market is benefiting particularly strongly from this trend, as pharmaceutical and food companies carry significant weight in the SMI.

In particular, industry heavyweights Roche, Novartis, and Nestlé have recently driven the benchmark index higher. Their products remain in demand even during economically challenging times. Encouraging financial results from various Swiss companies provided additional momentum on the stock market.

The Swiss stock market is thus proving resilient despite the war in the Middle East, high oil prices, and growing inflation concerns. This is because high energy prices are driving up inflation, thereby increasing pressure on central banks to keep interest rates high or raise them further. This is weighing particularly heavily on technology stocks. Many of these companies are valued on the stock market based on high expectations for future earnings. From today’s perspective, higher interest rates cause such future earnings to lose value.
