Jim Cramer Likes Lam Research but Says Buy Just 25% of Your Position

Quick Read

  • Lam’s free cash flow more than doubled to $3.24 billion as revenue surged 54% to $8.22 billion, marking a sixth straight earnings beat.

  • China accounted for 35% of revenue but management expects that share to drop ‘meaningfully’ in December as domestic Chinese spending falls.

On CNBC on October 29, 2026, Jim Cramer gave Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) one of the strongest recommendations a stock can get: “I think Lam Research is the best in the game of capital equipment.” In the same segment, he limited how much investors should buy right away: “If you want to buy 100 shares of Lam, I don’t want you to buy more than 25.” The comments came as the stock swung hard. Lam traded at $238.15 Friday morning, down 6.38% on the session and down 26.47% over the past month from $323.86.

What Lam Research Sells

Lam makes the machines chipmakers use to build semiconductors. Its tools handle deposition, which lays down ultra-thin layers of material, and etch, which cuts circuit patterns into those layers. It also makes cleaning tools. Its results fall into two segments.

Systems covers new equipment: customer Support and Other covers services, spare parts, upgrades, and the Reliant line of older-generation tools. As memory stacks grow taller and advanced packaging spreads, each wafer needs more deposition and etch steps. On the latest call, management said “deposition and etch will play a greater role in 2027” regardless of chip type.

Record Numbers Behind “Best in the Game”

Lam’s most recent quarter backs up the praise. In results reported October 21, 2026, revenue rose 54.4% to $8.22 billion, ahead of the $8.13 billion estimate. Non-GAAP EPS of $2.20 beat the $2.18 consensus, marking the sixth straight quarterly beat. Operating income rose 79.5%, and free cash flow came in at $3.24 billion, up 103.3%, according to the company’s SEC filing.

CEO Tim Archer credited the results to demand: “With AI driving higher semiconductor demand and greater device complexity, our focus on operational execution helped Lam deliver record revenue, profit, and earnings per share in the September quarter.” For the December quarter, Lam guided to revenue of about $8.60 billion +/- $400 million and EPS of $2.33 +/- $0.15. Management expects industry wafer fab equipment (WFE) spending to be in the mid-$150 billion range in 2026. Its preliminary 2027 outlook calls for more than $200 billion, and it says customer visibility extends through 2028. Someone has to power, cool, and network all that WFE spending, and we rounded up seven of the suppliers behind the AI expansion in a free report.

Why Buying in Stages Fits a Stock Moving This Fast

Building a position gradually means buying a portion now and adding later, either on dips or as the business keeps delivering. You never commit all your money at one price. In Cramer’s example, the full position is 100 shares, and the first purchase is limited to 25 shares.

Lam’s recent trading shows why this approach can help. The stock was at $273.12 when the strong quarter was filed, and it fell sharply in the days that followed. Over longer periods, it has still risen 39.53% year to date and 2705.07% over ten years. Moves that big reward patience on entry.

Several company-specific risks add to the case for caution:

  • China exposure: China made up 35% of revenue, up from 26% in the June quarter. Management expects that share to be “meaningfully down” in December as spending by domestic Chinese customers falls.

  • Export controls: Lam lists trade regulations, entity listings and foreign direct product rules among the risks that could limit its sales.

  • Supply limits: Archer said, “this revenue guide would have been a bit higher if not for some near-term supply chain constraints that we are actively managing.”

What to Watch Before Adding More

The December-quarter report will show whether Lam reaches the $8.60 billion midpoint while its China revenue shrinks. Management also promised a sharper 2027 WFE outlook on that call. Lam targets returning 85% of free cash flow to shareholders and has $3 billion left on its buyback authorization, which should help support the shares. If you’re following Cramer’s framework, each of these points is a chance to review before adding to that first quarter of a position.
