Should young people raid their pensions to buy a property?

As a 20-something graduate, my decision to snub a company pension scheme in favour of saving for a property deposit was a sacrifice I felt I had to make. I couldn’t afford to do both at the same time as repaying my student loan, even though it was minuscule by today’s standards, so I left the “free money” of employer contributions on the table. Buying my first flat was a far more pressing priority than locking up money for retirement.Decades later, the question of whether to prioritise “pension or property”...

What Trump’s tariffs really mean for investors in UK equities

As a global equity investor, there is much to consider from US President Trump’s new tariff regime, particularly in the context of UK equities. The UK and Singapore received the lowest ‘reciprocal tariffs’ in President Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ announcement. A tariff rate of 10 per cent, less than that imposed on the Eurozone, is probably a win for the UK economy, but for the UK stock market the picture is a little more nuanced.Compared to Europe, which faces a 20 per cent increased tariff, the changes will be easier for UK business to...

Trump liberation day tariffs lowering UK mortgage rates

It's all down to SONIA swap rates (very broadly speaking, this is how much banks pay for sterling overnight), which have fallen this morning following Liberation Day in the US. According to Bloomberg, traders are now pricing in nearly 63 basis points of cuts from the Bank of England with the expectation of three rate cuts this year. The result? Potentially cheaper mortgages for UK homeowners - albeit with worse rates for savers if rates fall. 🚨 #TrumpTariffs: Economic genius or global disaster? 10% import tax + 34% on China = higher prices for...
