Fake currencies: Police arrest 14 suspected fraudsters in Jigawa


Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 14 suspects for allegedly dealing in fake currencies.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday in Dutse, the state capital.

Shiisu said the suspects were arrested on Thursday in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, the suspects were nabbed by joint security operatives in a coordinated intelligence-led operation.

The spokesman added that the team carried out a successful raid on a criminal hideout in Digawa village where the suspected fraudsters are perpetrating their fraudulent activities.

“The operation, which took place in the early hours of Thursday followed credible intelligence reports about the activities of a syndicate involved in fraudulent practices and other criminal acts within the region.

“During the raid, security personnel arrested 14 male suspects and recovered a cache of incriminating items,” Shiisu said.

Shiisu listed the items recovered from the suspects to include nine fabricated pistols, seven dane guns, four motorcycles, 12 pieces of fake USD, 188 pieces of Central African Currency suspected to be fake, charmd, bow and arrow.

The police image maker stated further that the arrested suspects are currently in custody and undergoing thorough investigation, after which they will be charged to court.

“This operation underscores our unwavering commitment to safeguarding communities and rooting out criminal elements.

“The public is encouraged to continue cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities promptly,” he added.

Shiisu recalled that a group of the suspected fraudsters from Digiwa village had invaded and attacked Dumus village on Wednesday, for not supporting their fraudulent activities.

According to him, as a result of the alleged attack, one villager, identified as Isma’il Ibrahim lost his life, while eight others sustained injuries.
