LOOK AT THE DAMAGE AND THE IMPACT COMING UP AT 430 WITH SCHOOLS OUT IN A LOT OF POOLS OPEN, EXPERTS ARE REMINDING FAMILIES TO BE VIGILANT ABOUT WATER SAFETY. A NEW REPORT FINDS THAT, ON AVERAGE, NEARLY 400 CHILDREN DROWN EVERY YEAR, AND MOST OF THEM ARE UNDER AGE FIVE. BILL O’NEILL HAS A CLOSER LOOK AT THE DATA. DROWNING REMAINS THE LEADING CAUSE OF UNINTENTIONAL DEATH FOR KIDS BETWEEN THE AGES OF ONE AND FOUR, AND MOST OF THOSE DEATHS ARE ATTRIBUTED TO A GAP IN ADULT SUPERVISION. WHAT’S SO IMPORTANT TO BE EXTRA WATER SAFETY? VIGILANT? OUR LATEST DATA SHOWS NEARLY 400 CHILDREN DROWN UNDER THE AGE OF 15. HOWARD UNIVERSITY SWIM COACH NICK ASKEW SAYS HISTORY IS PARTIALLY TO BLAME. JIM CROW LAWS, WHERE POOLS WERE STRIPPED FROM MUNICIPAL COMMUNITIES. UM, THAT WHERE WHERE MOST OF THE MINORITY COMMUNITIES WERE HOUSED AND RESIDED. AND WHEN YOU TAKE AWAY THAT ACCESS, OF COURSE YOU CAN’T LEARN HOW TO SWIM. HERE ARE SOME STEPS TO PROTECT CHILDREN. NEVER LEAVE A CHILD UNATTENDED IN OR NEAR WATER, AND ALWAYS DESIGNATE AN ADULT WATER WATCHER. IF YOU OWN A POOL, INSTALL BARRIERS TO PREVENT AN UNSUPERVISED CHILD FROM ACCESSING THE WATER. LEARN HOW TO PERFORM CPR ON BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS. LEARN HOW TO SWIM AND TEACH YOUR CHILD TO SWIM. AND FINALLY, ENSURE ANY POOL HAS FEDERAL SAFETY STANDARDS. AND IF YOU’RE TAKING YOUR CHILD TO YOUR YOUR NEIGHBOR’S HOME OR SOMEONE ELSE’S HOME, THAT MAY HAVE A SWIMMING POOL, THAT THERE’S LAYERS OF PROTECTION ARE PUT IN PLACE AND THAT SOMEONE HAS BEEN DESIGNATED TO BE THAT WATER WATCHER. IF YOU’RE THAT DESIGNATED WATER WATCHER, REMEMBER PUT DOWN THAT BOOK, PUT AWAY YOUR PHONE. THOSE KIDS IN THE WATER DEMAND YOUR FULL ATTENTION. IN GREENSBORO, I’M BILL O’NEILL, WXII 12 NEWS.
