Man promised Rs 1.7 crore in exchange for old currency, duped of s 6.4 lakh

Bengaluru: Lured by the promise of massive returns for old currency notes and coins, a 67-year-old man was allegedly cheated of Rs 6.4 lakh in a cyberfraud that began on Facebook.According to the complainant, a resident of Ejipura, on April 6, while scrolling on Facebook, he came across an account, under the name of Rahul Kumar Jindal, advertising high-value deals for old currency collections. Intrigued, he contacted three mobile numbers listed and shared photos of his notes and coins. After receiving the details and the photos, the crooks claimed they would pay him a staggering Rs 1.7 crore in exchange for the old currency. Soon, the accused began contacting him through multiple phone numbers and convinced him to transfer money in stages under various pretexts such as income tax, TDS, and GST. Between April 6 and April 7, the victim transferred Rs 6,39,000 through RTGS, NEFT, and digital payment applications to different bank accounts provided by the accused. The crooks told him they would collect the old currency from him but kept demanding more money, citing different reasons. Realising he was duped, he asked them to return his money, and they stopped responding.A case has been registered under the Information Technology Act and Section 318 (cheating) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Central cybercrime police station. Efforts are on to freeze the money from the fraudsters’ accounts, a senior police officer said.
