
Sri Lanka, a popular tourism spot for Indian travelers, is now looking to position itself as a destination for big Indian weddings. The island nation’s tourism board has launched its first-ever wedding-focused campaign in India, hosting multi-city luxury wedding shows to woo couples and families.
The move marks a strategic shift in Sri Lanka’s tourism approach. According to Buddhika Hewawasam, chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the potential payoff is significant.
“The average Indian tourist spends around $170-180 per day in Sri Lanka,” Hewawasam told Skift. “With wedding groups, that figure doubles. If we build the wedding segment, per person spending can reach at least $300 per day.”
Add to that, Hewawasam also expects visitors to stay longer in the country
