Only six currencies are now supported by PayPal on Steam.
Steam users might have to shift payment methods if they’ve been using PayPal for their transactions. This week, Steam confirmed that PayPal’s affiliated banks had terminated payment processing for purchases on the PC gaming storefront.
In a blurb on the Steam Support FAQ, the company confirmed that PayPal transactions were now only supported in six specific currencies: Euro, Canadian Dollar, British Pound Sterling, Japanese Yen, Australian Dollar or the United States Dollar.
Steam encounters issues with PayPal transactions
Most Steam users around the world are now unable to make transactions using PayPal. An official statement on Steam Support’s Purchasing Issues FAQ explains:
In early July 2025, PayPal notified Valve that their acquiring bank for payment transactions in certain currencies was immediately terminating the processing of any transactions related to Steam. This affects Steam purchases using PayPal in currencies other than EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD and USD. We hope to offer PayPal as an option for these currencies in the future but the timeline is uncertain. We are also evaluating adding additional payment methods on Steam for the customers affected by this.
The statement continues: “In the meantime, please use one of our other current payment methods during checkout. If you can’t use any of the available options, you can consider using a Steam Wallet code to add funds to your account.”
With just six currencies now supported by PayPal on the platform, most Steam users around the world are now locked out of using the payment method entirely. Valve has not given an official reason for why PayPal’s affiliated banks have terminated processing of all transactions, but it’s likely that the issue ties into Valve’s ongoing issues with Visa and Mastercard payments.
Recently, Steam began delisting certain games amid pressure from payment processors including Visa and Mastercard. Itch.io was also affected by the recent push against NSFW video games, which originated from a campaign by Australian organisation Collective Shout. The organisation has raised concerns surrounding adult content in gaming, leading to the aforementioned payment processors laying down pressure on video game storefronts.
What is puzzling is that six currencies have been left unaffected by this change on Steam’s side, although this may not remain the case for long. For now, PayPal users on Steam will have to rely on other payment methods to buy their games.
