The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted two facilities used for printing fake Indian currency notes in Maharashtra and Haryana. Three accused have been arrested.

The action was taken after the Delhi Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate seized 203 high-quality paper sheets with embedded security threads bearing the inscriptions “RBI” and “Bharat.” The consignment arrived from Hong Kong on January 24, 2025, at the New Courier Terminal in Delhi.

“Considering the economic security ramifications, the case was taken over by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on February 3, 2025, for further investigation,” said a government release.

“The DRI arrested two people who were found to be the actual importers of the currency paper in Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh, and Bengaluru, Karnataka. The intended recipient/buyer of such paper was also apprehended by the DRI in Rajasthan on February 9, 2025. He admitted to having previously purchased currency paper from the importer for the purpose of printing fake Indian currency notes,” it said.

Equipment seized

“A search of his residence in Bhiwani district, Haryana, led to the recovery of incriminating material, including a printer and partially printed fake Indian currency notes. The case was handed over to the Haryana police for further action and investigation,” said the release.

As part of the same operation, the DRI intercepted two more people in Thane along with incriminating material, including Photoshop files of ₹500 currency notes, and currency paper with the security thread. The case was handed over to the Maharashtra police for further action.

The two accused from Thane and another from Haryana, who were found to be involved in printing fake Indian currency notes, have been arrested by police of the respective states. FIRs have also been registered in both cases based on complaints lodged by the DRI officers.
