NEW YORK – It was a huge week for the Hope College basketball programs.
The teams rang the bell to close the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday in New York City, then both went out and won two games in the Big Apple.
The No. 12 Hope women (12-1) won the CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Touranment. The Flying Dutch defeated Salem State (Mass.) 73-57 on Thursday, then topped Lehman College 93-31 on Friday for the title.
Freshman Chloe Brunsberg was named tournament MVP. She had 11 points against Lehman and 14 against Salem State.
Sophomore Sydney Vis also made the all-tournament team. She had seven points in the finale but had a career-high 22 points in the win over Salem State to go along with four assists and three steals.
“I thought it was a really good day for [Vis], she drew three fouls, and the four assists showed that she was playing aggressively but not just for her shot, but for her team,” said Hope coach Brian Morehouse. “I was really happy with the way that she played.”
Against Lehman, Revin Jemison, Jada Garner and Olivia Bellows each scored 12 points to lead the team.
The Hope men also claimed two victories in New York.
On Thursday, the Flying Dutchmen defeated Yeshiva University 87-79.
Hope then defeated Lehman 91-58.
Hope’s Tanner Wiegerink had 19 points and 13 rebounds against Yeshiva.
Clayton Dykhouse had 13 points and four assists in the opener.
“Yeshiva is such a disciplined and a high IQ offensive basketball team, and it was a team that was very difficult to stop,” Mitchell said. “I’m proud of our guys finishing the way they did and playing through tough circumstances. It was a tremendous win in a very emotional and spirited environment. Our women’s team gave us a great lift with their noise and support. Props to coach (Brian Morehouse) his staff and all of their players. We really appreciated it and thrived in it.
“A lot of credit to Yeshiva for its hospitality and class. They were a remarkable host and super complimentary of our players, which I really appreciate.”
Wiegerink and Hope came back and made it two in a row to close the year. He had 13 points and five rebounds in a 91-58 win over Lehman.
Dykhouse had 10 points and six assists.
