The holiday is tied to the U.S. Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln declared that enslaved people in Confederate states were free when he issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, according to Britannica. However, African Americans living in Texas didn’t learn of the news until June 19, 1965, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston and told them.
Texas observed the first Juneteenth celebrations in 1866, and made Juneteenth a state holiday in 1980. It became a federal holiday in 2021.
Is the Post Office Open Today? Are Banks Open?
U.S. Postal Service locations will be closed on Wednesday, and there will be no regular mail delivery, except for holiday premium Priority Mail Express. Most banks will also be closed.
