Is the stock market open on Martin Luther King Day?


On Monday, Jan. 19, Americans honors the life and accomplishments of civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Florida made it a state holiday in 1978, five years before it was made a federal holiday in 1983. Banks, government offices, mail delivery and some businesses will be closed. Will stock markets be open?

Here’s what to know.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, sometimes abbreviated to MLK Day, is commemorated on the third Monday in January every year. In 2026, that’s Monday, Jan. 19.

King’s actual birthday was Jan. 15.

The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19 and will reopen for trading at normal hours, 9:30 a.m. ET to 4 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE National, and NYSE Texas late trading sessions also will be closed.

After Monday, the stock market schedule will be business as usual until the markets close again on Monday, Feb. 16, for Washington’s Birthday.

Nasdaq will be closed Monday and will reopen at normal trading hours on Tuesday.

The U.S. bond market will be closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, and will reopen at normal hours on Tuesday.

Over-the-counter trading, which is done without an exchange, will be open normal hours on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026.

U.S. stock markets will be closed on the following days in 2026:

  • Monday, Jan. 19: Markets closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

  • Monday, Feb. 16: Markets closed for Washington’s Birthday

  • Friday, April 3: Markets closed for Good Friday

  • Monday, May 25: Markets closed for Memorial Day

  • Friday, June 19: Markets closed for Juneteenth National Independence Day

  • Friday, July 3: Markets closed for Independence Day (observed)

  • Monday, Sept. 7: Markets closed for Labor Day

  • Thursday, Nov. 26: Markets closed for Thanksgiving

  • Friday: Nov. 27: markets close at 1 p.m. ET the Friday after Thanksgiving

  • Thursday, Dec. 24: Markets close at 1 p.m. for Christmas Eve

  • Friday, Dec. 25: Markets closed for Christmas Day

The London Stock Exchange, EuroNext, Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Tokyo Stock Exchange will be open normal trading hours on Monday.
