The Sensex fell 829 points to close at 76,034, while the Nifty declined 228 points to 23,639, slipping below the 23,650 mark.
37 Nifty stocks ending in the red. The Nifty Auto index fell more than 6% in the past two sessions. M&M, Maruti Suzuki and Eicher Motors were among the top losers on the index.
Banking stocks also weighed on the market, with the Nifty Bank index sliding 635 points to 55,101, while the Nifty Midcap index dropped 207 points to 56,254.
Among gainers, Coal India rose nearly 5% to emerge as the top Nifty performer. Aarti Industries gained over 5% after securing a $150 million agrochemical supply contract.
On the downside, L&T fell nearly 3%, and Colgate-Palmolive India slid over 10% in the past two sessions. Food delivery platforms Eternal and Swiggy also declined up to 3% after reports of LNG shortages impacting restaurant operations.
Market breadth remained weak, with the NSE advance-decline ratio at 2:3.
