Stock Market Today: Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq edge higher after economic data; Bank of America and Morgan Stanley earnings see mixed reaction

U.S. stock index futures remained mostly higher, while Treasury yields inched lower, after the latest batch of U.S. economic data.

Highlights included a reading on December retail sales. Sales increased by 0.4% last month, slightly less than economists had expected. First-time weekly jobless benefit claims came in at 217,000 last week, slightly more than economists had expected.

Thursday’s big surprise came from the January reading of the Philly Federal Reserve’s manufacturing survey. It came in at 44.3, substantially better than the modest contraction economists had expected.

Here is where futures stood in recent trading:

S&P 500 futures were up 5 points, or 0.1%, at 5,994.

Nasdaq-100 futures were up 62 points, or 0.3%, at 21,463.

Dow futures were down 135 points, or 0.3%, at 43,334.
