As the largest housing association in Northern Ireland, managing almost 14,000 homes, Radius Housing is playing a key role in ensuring that the standards of housing and construction are raised in their new build projects. Whether it be a new housing development, an adaptation of an existing home or the creation of new community facilities, Radius’s goal is to build to the highest standards.
The homes built by Radius, as well as many other housing associations and developers across NI, benefit from having a strong construction sector, with experience and talent that can ensure that the new homes are of high quality and that the whole journey, from identification of a potential site to a new family moving in, is as smooth as possible.
Through its development activities Radius understands the valued contributions of partners in the successful delivery of projects, and this year they are sponsoring the Property Legal Team of the Year category at the Belfast Telegraph Property Awards, which recognises excellence in property and celebrates the many businesses and individuals who play a part in the sector.
Anita Conway, Radius director of development, recognises the collective effort in housing development.
She said: “From architects and planners, builders and all the skilled sub-contractors, through to the professional services, such as the legal experts who keep us right along the way, there are so many people involved in supporting Radius as we create new homes for our tenants.
“At the moment housing development, particularly social housing development, faces a challenging environment, with reduced government funding, higher costs, planning delays, and an urgent need for investment in utility infrastructure.
“Despite those challenges, what we see right across the housing sector are creative people, committed to a partnership approach and finding solutions.
“In this way Radius has sustained a rolling 700-unit development programme across a number of sites, with completions at Newcastle, Antrim, Belfast and Ballymena expected in the coming weeks.
“While we celebrate the depth of talent in our sector, we also want to see more new talent and skills coming through, so our contracts provide space for apprenticeships to learn on the job. In this way the Radius Academy is supporting a host of key roles in housing.”
New homes at St Patrick’s Barracks in Ballymena are a particularly important project for Radius, as they form part of a major Department for Communities-led regeneration project. The 135 homes are Radius’s first to be all built to EPC A rating, highlighting its commitment to sustainable development, and playing some part in helping tenants with their energy bills.
Anita added: “We all have a duty to play a part in tackling climate change, and the construction sector has opportunity to show leadership in this area.
“Radius’s ESG strategy will see further investment in existing properties and in the standards in our new build properties. By striving to always improve standards, we can all build resilient communities with quality homes, enabling more citizens to help our economy thrive and grow.”
