Ex-England footballer Sol Campbell knocks another £10m off his eight-bed Chelsea townhouse to £15m

Former England defender Sol Campbell has been forced to knock off another £10million off the value of his eight-bed Chelsea townhouse, after claiming to have been ‘cheated out of £1.5million by renters. 

The former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur star originally put the massive Grade II-listed property on Chelsea’s historic Cheyne Walk, which has its own lift, on the market for £25 million. 

But he has now reduced the price of the home, which was designed by his former partner interior designer Kelly Hoppen, to £15 million, an eyewatering 40% reduction from its price five years ago. 

Estate agents Knight Frank who are selling the house describe it as: ‘A Grade II listed townhouse, overlooking the river Thames, that has been extensively refurbished and excellently interior designed to create an elegant and substantial London home. 

‘Comprising a total of six bedroom suites, the main house is arranged over five floors and is connected to a valuable Mews house via a subterranean passageway.

‘The first floor of the house provides a traditional reception room, spanning the whole floor with exceptional views to the front, facing south on to the River Thames, and taking in the full profile of the Chelsea’s spectacular Albert Bridge. 

‘A passenger lift serves all principal floors and the house features a significant specification and contemporary style that balances modern living with the quintessential period character of such a historic property.’ 

Campbell previously told the Mail that he was swindled out of £1.5 million by a renter who refused to pay to live in the property. 

Sol detailed his fury over both the tenant and letting agency, Savills, after deciding to let the property during summer 2021.

Recalling that a two-year contract was duly signed, he explained : ‘Savills got the guy in, Initially, all seemed well. The tenant had apparently just sold his insurance business — for £1 billion.’

‘He paid the deposit and three months’ rent.’ But that was it: not a penny more was paid,’ he continued.

‘The tenant has done a lot to take himself off the internet but he was named in the Panama Papers,’ Sol adds, referring to the files containing financial records about wealthy individuals and government officials which, in some cases, expose fraud and tax evasion.

Before angrily explaining: ‘He’s apparently getting divorced, he’s paying two or three staff, he’s paying school fees. He’s paying everyone — except me.’

A Savills spokesman says references and credit checks were conducted, noting: ‘The decision to proceed with a tenancy rests solely with the property owner.’
