Historic Mallorca mansion goes on sale on UK’s largest property portal for 3.2 million euros

The former residence of Guillem Cifre de Colonya, pedagogue and philanthropist from Pollensa and founder of the Caixa d’Estalvis de Pollença (Colonya) and the Pollensa Free Institute of Education, has gone on sale for 3.2 million euros on the UK’s largest property portal, Rightmove, which specialises in luxury properties and is headquartered in Puerto Pollensa.

The estate, a traditional Mallorcan property built in the early 20th century, is located in the exclusive Vall de Colonya. Covering approximately 2,400 square metres of land with 540 square metres of built space, it features seven bedrooms, two bathrooms, several terraces, a library, and a living room with a fireplace. Surrounded by nature and with views of the Serra, the house retains its original architectural charm, although it requires some renovation, as noted on the portal.

In addition to Cifre, another distinguished resident of the house was the architect Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza, one of Spain’s most prominent 20th-century architects and the creator of landmark works such as Casa Huarte in Pollensa and the Ciutat Blanca development in Alcudia. According to various sources, Sáenz de Oiza himself may have carried out some architectural interventions on the property, including the addition of a balcony and a skylight.

Municipal sources suggest that the property may have passed from the Cifre family to its current owners in the 1950s, coinciding with the return to Mallorca of Guillem Cifre’s son, also named Guillem, after a stay in the United States.

News of the sale has sparked debate in the town. Some residents believe it would be “interesting” for Caixa Colonya to acquire the home of its founder. However, the announcement comes at the same time as the ambitious Can Morató restoration project, in which the institution plans to invest 12 million euros to establish its future headquarters and offices. While no official statements have been made, all indications suggest that it would not be able to take on this purchase at present.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Pollensa, Martí March, ruled out any possibility of a municipal acquisition: “We haven’t considered it, because it’s worth more than three million and we would have to justify its use.” Nonetheless, he acknowledged that the news “hurts people’s feelings” and regretted that “it is a private property that can be sold.”
