Applicants named in planning documents as P G and Mrs E Braathen have submitted a planning application to the Lake District National Park Authority to convert Belmount Hall, near Hawkshead, into a large holiday-let or a single dwelling-house.
Planning documents state the grade II listed building, which dates back to the 18th century, needs a ‘repair and maintenance project’.
Under the previous long-term tenants the property was a ‘popular’ wedding, events venue and guest house until April 2024, plans add.
Planning documents state for the months prior to this there were few events and guests and the house was being used primarily as the business owners’ private home.
The design, access and heritage statement reads: “The house is currently occupied by the applicants and a full-time caretaker undertaking urgent repairs and maintenance of the building, garden and grounds, in readiness for the planned scheme going ahead.”
According to plans Belmount Hall was gifted to Beatrix Potter in 1937, and in her will she noted her wish for the preservation of the Belmount walled garden and woodland as a bird sanctuary with the site gifted by her widower to the National Trust in 1944.
Plans have also been submitted by the applicant to convert the bank barn to create a dwelling as required for staff accommodation.
The application is under consideration by the LDNPA.
