Yesterday, sources close to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed that the Sussexes were hoping to find a “permanent” home in the U.K., since Harry missed his London life. But today, the Mirror reports that they actually had a property in the Cotswolds. Reports suggest that Harry and Meghan had a two-year lease on a property and “signed the lease shortly before they walked down the aisle in May 2018.” After the two of them got married, they moved into Frogmore Cottage, but had to renovate it before settling in. While all the construction was going on, they stayed in the Cotswolds property (more specifically, it was in Oxfordshire), which was worth £2.5 million in 2018.
The Mirror adds that the home spanned a “farmhouse, a separate two-bedroom cottage for staff and guests, and a converted barn.” Sources close to the Sussexes previously shared that Meghan and Harry “loved walking the dogs there and entertaining their friends in complete solitude” and that those “friends” included George and Amal Clooney.
In Spare, Harry mentioned Frogmore Cottage and how he hoped he’d be able to live there forever.
“Once upon a time, this was going to be my forever home. Instead, it had proved to be just another brief stop,” he wrote. The couple was officially evicted from Frogmore last year, even though they left England in 2020 and moved to California.
“We can confirm the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage,” a spokesperson for the royal family said at the time. The decision made it so that Harry no longer had a primary residence in the U.K.
Royal author Tom Quinn noted that “Harry was absolutely furious and in tears about being evicted from Frogmore he felt his father had no right to do it and that it was purely vindictive.”
Even without a house in his home country, Harry seems to be doing just fine in Montecito. Earlier this month, his daughter, Lilibet, celebrated her third birthday with a few of her parents’ neighbors, including Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, Oprah Winfrey, and Ellen DeGeneres.
