Property expert reveals the 5 paint colours that will make your home sell quicker


Selling your home can be a stressful experience, and finding a potential buyer can be an anxiety-inducing process. However, certain paint shades could help speed up the selling process

Whether you’re downsizing, upsizing or taking a step off of the property ladder altogether, selling your home can be a stressful experience. From the worry of being in a big property chain to reading the ins and outs of various surveys and contracts, moving homes can be equal parts joy and anxiousness.

Something that can make the process even more stressful is waiting for a prospective buyer to put an offer on your home in the first place. Although every potential buyer is different, and is looking for different things, it turns out that certain design features can stop people making offers – and the colour of your walls could make all the difference too.

While opting for different paint colours in your home is a great way of adding your own personality to a space, not everyone is as interested in an area that’s bursting with colour. Instead, opting for neutral shades, or simply painting over any pops of colour when putting your home on the market, is a safe bet.

However, it also turns out that specific shades can help a home sell quicker and even encourage higher offers. “The colours in your home set the mood and shape the buyer’s first impressions,” says Kesha Foss-Smith, Regional Director at John D Wood & Co (johndwood.co.uk). “The right shades can make a space feel bigger, brighter, and more stylish – while the wrong ones can put buyers off before they’ve even finished the viewing.”

She adds: “A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to transform a home before putting it on the market. By choosing the right colours, sellers can create an environment that feels inviting and aspirational – helping them attract more buyers and potentially secure a faster sale.”

Topping the list of colours sure to be popular among prospective buyers is dusty pink. While pink might not be to everyone’s taste, the soft and muted shade is warming and inviting and adds a contemporary feel to a room. It’s also a great neutral option without feeling boring.

Elsewhere, soft white is another great choice. Although white paint colours allow buyers to well and truly put their own stamp on the property, opting for a shade with some warmth can help it feel light and airy without becoming too clinical.

Meanwhile sage greens are a buyer-friendly option, especially when used in kitchens and bedrooms. As green walls can help add a sense of calmness to a space, house buyers may feel a sense of balance as soon as they walk through the door.

A colour that goes well with sage green as well as on its own is an earthy terracotta. The shade has a deep warmth to it, meaning it can add depth and character and create a cocooning feel in living areas – ideal for any buyers looking for some cosiness.

Alternatively, if you’d rather your home give off a fresh and airy vibe, light shades of blue in bathrooms have been linked to higher sale prices. As well as helping to open a space up, it can help a property feel as if it’s well cared for.
