A millionaire has called out Chancellor Rachel Reeves and has even claimed she should be “put in prison.” Businessman Charlie Mullins, who is the founder of Pimlico Plumbers in London, admitted that he left the UK for Marbella, Spain, “because of Labour” in a recent interview with Talk TV. Speaking with the host Mark Dolan, Mullins accused Rachel Reeves and the Labour government of “robbing the working class people”.

The businessman, who sold his company in 2021, spoke to Dolan about Reeves’ potential property tax overhaul. It was reported earlier this week that Labour could scrap Stamp Duty and council tax in favour of radical reforms to raise cash. This reportedly includes introducing a proportional property tax for homes worth more than £500,000.

Some have hit out at the proposed new plans, saying that they will negatively impact the British public.

Mullins told Dolan: “What she’s doing now is atrocious. She is robbing working-class people again. She’s talking about someone with a £500,000 house, which is nothing in London. It’s like a one-bedroom apartment.”

He added: “How does she think these people got them? They are working-class people. They purchased the property. Now, they want to tax you on buying the property and tax you on selling the property. What it will do is freeze the property market up.

“It will freeze it up completely. It will stop people wanting to buy a property, and it will also, people like me and many others, it will force us out of the UK even more. You have a house that you’ve paid a tax on, and it’s not necessarily made money; it’s just built up over the years with appreciation of money, and now they’re going to you when you sell it.

“My advice to anybody leaving the UK. Sell your house now before she brings it in. Because she will bring this in very quickly. It’s another way of robbing working-class people.” He then accused the government of lying about this potential change being a way to raise money for local councils, claiming that it’s a way for them to raise money for people who “don’t contribute” to the UK, who are “poncing off the country”.

The proposed change would reportedly see owner-occupiers pay proportional tax on houses worth more than £500,000 when they sell their home. Rates would be set based on the value of the home.

As it stands, only buyers have to pay 5% stamp duty when purchasing homes worth between £250,001 and £925,000. Last year, Mullins put his £12 million London penthouse up for sale and left the UK for Marbella in fears of new taxes being proposed by Labour.

The businessman revealed at the time that he made the decision so he wouldn’t be hit with inheritance tax, claiming that he no longer had any assets in the UK.
