House prices in second home hotspots are sliding as higher council tax bills begin to bite, analysis by The Telegraph reveals.

Average values in these areas dropped by 3.7pc since 211 councils doubled charges for second homes last April.

Nowhere has been hit harder than South Lakeland in Cumbria, where prices plunged 7.3pc between 2024 and 2025 – the steepest fall of all the second home hotspots.

As many as one in four properties in the area, which is part of the Lake District, are not occupied year-round, according to the Lake District National Park Authority.

But the numbers are already shifting. Official figures show there were more than 5,400 second homes in Westmorland and Furness, the local authority area for South Lakeland, last year – a drop of more than 400 second homes since 2024.

In second place, the Isle of Anglesey, in Wales, recorded a 7.1pc decrease, while Scarborough in North Yorkshire, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, and wider Dorset all saw prices fall by more than 5pc.
